Between 2006 and 2024, Iraqi government forces and Shiite militias committed hundreds of massacres against hundreds of thousands of innocent Sunni Arabs. Below are some of the massacres that have been officially documented and recognized by international and local human rights organizations:
- The Makr al-Dhib wedding party massacre in Al-Qaim, Anbar.
- The Haditha massacre in Anbar.
- The Mahmoudiyah crimes in the Baghdad Belt.
- The Balad massacre in Salah al-Din.
- The Hayy al-Jihad massacre in Baghdad.
- The Mosul massacre in Nineveh.
- During the 2007 military campaign in Diyala Governorate, dozens of mass graves were discovered.
- The Musab ibn Umair Mosque massacre in Diyala.
- The Jableh massacre in northern Babil Governorate.
- Members of the Federal Police and the Popular Mobilization Forces executed thousands of people fleeing the Al-Sijr area, northeast of Fallujah in Anbar Governorate, in what is known as the Al-Sijr massacre.
- The Saqlawiyah massacres in Anbar were committed by the terrorist Popular Mobilization Forces, particularly the terrorist Hezbollah Brigades and Asaib Ahl al-Haq. These forces committed massacres, brutal torture, mass executions, and enforced disappearances involving thousands of people.
- The Al-Muhamadi massacre in Anbar resulted in hundreds of victims.
- The Popular Mobilization Forces militia detained approximately 2,600 men from Anbar while they were passing through the Al-Razzaza checkpoint. They were killed, tortured, and their organs were trafficked by Asaib Ahl al-Haq and Kataib Hezbollah.
- The Al-Jayalah massacre in Diyala claimed the lives of dozens after an armed attack on the village of Al-Jayalah, which is inhabited by the Al-Izza tribe. The attack was carried out by members of Shiite militias connected to Diyala’s Shiite governor, Al-Tamimi.
- The Barwana massacre was carried out by Shiite militias against Sunni Arabs from the city of Muqdadiyah in Diyala who had fled to the relatively safe village of Barwana. Hundreds were killed.
- The Sariya Mosque massacre occurred in Diyala in 2013, in the Al-Saray area, and claimed more than hundreds of victims.
- The Hawija massacre in Kirkuk was carried out by SWAT forces and the Iraqi Army in 2013. It killed 54 people and wounded dozens.
- The Farhatiyah massacre occurred in the Farhatiyah area, west of Balad District in Salah al-Din Governorate in north-central Iraq, in 2020. Shiite gunmen abducted hundreds of Sunnis from the village of Farhatiyah and executed them that same day.
- Massacres against the Albu Ajeel tribe in Tikrit, Salah al-Din.
- Massacres against the Al-Bayjat tribe in the city of Al-Awja in Tikrit.
- In 2017, aircraft belonging to the U.S.-led international coalition carried out airstrikes on neighborhoods in New Mosul, on the western side of Mosul in Nineveh. The strikes killed approximately 700 people.
- Shiite massacres against Sunnis between 2005 and 2007 resulted in the deaths of more than 250,000 Sunnis in Baghdad, Babil, Basra, Diyala, and Salah al-Din.
- The displacement and killing of Sunnis in Basra included dozens of crimes.
- A massacre against Sunnis in the Al-Qahira neighborhood of Baghdad claimed hundreds of victims.
- Massacres against Sunni Arabs in Nasiriyah.
- Massacres against Sunni Arabs in Babil.
- Massacres against the residents of Jurf al-Sakhar claimed the lives of more than 3,000 documented victims, in addition to a larger number of undocumented victims. The city remains occupied by terrorist Shiite militias, and its residents are not permitted to return.
- During the 2016-2017 Mosul massacre, Iraqi Shiite militias deliberately shelled civilians and killed no fewer than 45,000 Sunni citizens.
The total number of documented massacres committed against Sunnis in Iraq by Iraqi forces and terrorist Shiite militias, as recorded by international and local human rights organizations, is 28. There are also hundreds of undocumented massacres.
